Culturally Complex is a podcast that centers around the topic of adoption. Specifically international and interracial adoption. It is a platform for adoptees and parents alike to share their stories and give insight to families who might consider adoption in the future. 

The Start

This project is a special case for me as a designer. For our final project as students at East Tennessee State University, we had free reign to create whatever we wanted, as long as it pertained to our own agency as designers. Specifically agency in the sense of control that you feel in your life and your capacity to influence your own thoughts and behavior. For me, being an adoptee influenced my choice in creating a podcast that allows adoptees and parents to talk about their experiences with adoption, whether it was positive, negative, or anything in between.

SOLUTIONS

The solutions I came up with for our problem of defining our agency consists of a brand logomark, full length podcast video episodes and audio episodes, a website, social media posts and social media video clips for each episode. 

Website

I created a landing page for the Culturally Complex podcast. It is a single page website. This website was developed in Webflow.

Social Media Posts

All social media clips follow the same format of being vertical for mobile apps with captions of edited down video from the podcast episode.

Static social media posts follow this format in which the adoptee for that week is introduced and a quote from their episode is shared.

GALLERY INSTALLATION

Part of our final project was to have our work shown in a gallery setting. Finding a way to show a podcast, which is something that lives in a digital space and bringing it to a physical space was challenging. My solution to this was to have pictures of each interviewee with a pull quote from their episode on the wall and have a TV playing the podcast trailer and the social media videos playing. So that the viewer could find a person who they wanted to hear more from, and wait for their social media clip to play through and listen through the headphones provided.
